PENRITH - 1961
The History Of Crane Enfield Copper Tube Factory
The Crane Enfield Copper Tube Factory opened in Penrith in 1961. The business was first established in 1867 by George Ekins Crane as G E Crane and Sons in Sydney, the company evolved from producing building supplies and lead products to becoming a key player in copper tube manufacturing.
Crane Enfield Metals, formed in 1961 as a joint venture between G E Crane and Enfield Rolling Mills of England, established its copper tube manufacturing plant here in Penrith.
This site was pivotal for Crane Copper Tube’s growth, featuring significant expansions including an aluminium extrusion plant in 1964 and a large copper alloy extrusion press in 1971.
The Penrith facility became renowned for its high-quality copper tubes, serving various industries and contributing to the company's global reputation. Crane Copper Tube's notable advancements include pioneering aluminium rolling for aircraft during WWII. The plant ceased operations in late 2014.
