The Manufactor site in Penrith has a rich history rooted in Australian manufacturing. Originally home to the Crane Enfield Copper Tube Factory, the site has played a pivotal role in industrial development since its opening in 1961.

The story of the factory began much earlier, in 1867, when George Ekins Crane established G E Crane and Sons in Sydney, producing building supplies and lead products. Over time, the company evolved and expanded into copper tube manufacturing, becoming a key player in the industry.

In 1961, Crane partnered with Enfield Rolling Mills of England, forming Crane Enfield Metals, and set up a state-of-the-art copper tube manufacturing plant in Penrith. This facility became crucial to Crane Copper Tube’s growth, with further expansions including an aluminium extrusion plant in 1964 and a copper alloy extrusion press in 1971.

The Penrith plant quickly gained a reputation for producing high-quality copper tubes, serving industries across Australia and contributing to the company’s global success. Crane Copper Tube also played a significant role in pioneering aluminium rolling for aircraft during WWII. However, after decades of operation, the plant ceased production in late 2014.

Today, the site has been transformed by AonAri Property, into Manufactor - revitalised into a thriving ‘makers park,’ dedicated to supporting Australian manufacturing businesses. Rather than allowing the site to fall into disrepair, AonAri has transformed Manufactor into a vibrant hub where local manufacturers can innovate, expand, and actively engage with the surrounding community. This evolution reflects the ongoing spirit of innovation and industrial progress that has defined the location for more than 60 years.

As John Joannou states, “If we lose sight of where we came from, how can we ever understand where we’re going?” John Joannou.
